The Inevitable Hour (Al-Haqqah)

Verses 38-52 GROUP_1517 69.38-52

38
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ
But nay, I swear by all that you can see
39
وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ
as well as all that you cannot see:
40
إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ
most surely, this is the word brought by a noble messenger,
41
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تُؤْمِنُونَ
it is not the word of a poet—how little you believe!—
42
وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Nor is it the word of a soothsayer—how little you reflect!
43
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
It is a revelation sent down by the Sustainer of the Universe:
44
وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ
if he had invented any lies about Us,
45
لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ
We would indeed have seized him by his right hand
46
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ
and would indeed have cut his life-vein,
47
فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَاجِزِينَ
and none of you could have held Us off from him.
48
وَإِنَّهُ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
And surely it is an admonition to the God-fearing.
49
وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ
We know very well that there are some among you who reject Our signs—
50
وَإِنَّهُ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ
it will be a source of bitter regret for those who deny the truth—
51
وَإِنَّهُ لَحَقُّ الْيَقِينِ
it is the indubitable truth.
52
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Almighty.

Commentary

(a) It literally means, ‘whatever you see and whatever you do not see bear testimony to the veracity of this discourse’ that is, whatever knowledge was at the command of humanity at the time the Quran was revealed and whatever was going to come within its reach thereafter, both go to prove the truth of the messenger’s utterances. Neither the present available knowledge contradicts the Quran being the Truth, nor will future knowledge be able to do so. In spite of this, those who do not accept it simply prove that they are not serious about Truth and Untruth.
